In Sickness As in Health: Helping Couples Cope with the Complexities of Illness

The biopsychosocial framing of illness and pain places greatest emphasis upon biology, some on psychology, and little on the social. Patients and effective practitioners know better: disrupted primary partner relationships live at the core of the illness experience. And that relationship is a critical factor in recovery.

This engaging and practical guide deconstructs the effect illness has on the relationship by using couples’ stories, told with insight and honesty, combined with the authors’ illness experiences and expert wisdom. Couples, and their practitioners, are offered strategies to strengthen the resilience couples need to deal with the complexities of illness and pain.
