The CDC releases new guidelines for chronic pain management encouraging more judicious use of opioids. Opioids should only be used after assessment of risk for misuse. Patients should be educated on how to use and dispose of opioids. Providers prescribing opioids should know how to dose increase and taper opioids. Opioids are recommended for treatment of chronic pain when non-pharmacologic and non-opioid medications have been tried. For acute pain management, opioids should be prescribed with a taper and only for short periods of time. The CDC implies that patient safety is equivalent to providing adequate pain control.
